Re-watching this move for this class I really saw many leadership qualities within the story. I also learned Moana was more so a mentee than a leader within the story. She learned from her grandmother and father. Her father wanted her to learn how to lead others but her grandmother wanted her to be free and follow what she wanted to do. Moana’s dream to explore the ocean and go beyond her reef was honestly the beginning of the development of a sense of self. Moana then as a leader goes out to save her dying village. She obtains the heart only because she is a friend to humanity which leads to her saving her village from destruction. She learned to be this friend to humanity from her grandmother as she was a very spiritual person and arguably this is what started the framework for Moana to be a friend to humanity. Moana’s father set her up for my practical leadership he wanted her to be a mentor to others and work to bring out the potential in others as well. Moana at the end of the story as well as everything she learned on her journey made her a great leader fit to lead not only her tribe but the seas as well. Moana also dealt with the very self-centered demi god Maui. While he was the reason this whole situation started I do believe his encounters with Moana however helped him become a better person because of the values put into her by her family she was able to lead someone else to a better path. She made him accept his mistakes and admit that even a demi god like him can make mistakes. Overall Moana was someone who had to go on a journey and fail and get things right to figure out the type of leader and person she desired to be. In the end I feel she learned she can still follow her dreams and instill leadership on others. That relates to another ethnic person we learned leadership about with Binti and how there was a split between whether to follow the beliefs of their culture or to stray away. I do feel however that both women came into their own conclusion that is a mix between their cultures and themselves.

In class we talked about if Moana’s grandmother pushed the idea that Moana had a calling onto her. I completely disagree because mentors are supposed to be able to see the latent potential within their mentee and I feel that was what she was doing. Showing Moana she had a bigger calling would lead her to follow the path to success and leadership that she needed to follow.

Part One

I’ve been staring at the wall
‘Long as I can remember, never really knowing why
I wish I could be the perfect leader
But I come back to reality, no matter how hard I try
Every turn I take, every trail I track
Every path I make, every road leads back
To the place I know, where I can not go, where I long to be

See the world? It calls me
And no one knows, how far it goes
If I just took off one day
One day I’ll know, if I go there’s just no telling how far I’ll go

I know everybody will love me when I follow my dreams, seems so happy in the future
Everything is by design
I know everybody in the future has a role in the future
So maybe I can roll with mine
I can lead with my heart, I can make us strong
I’ll be satisfied if I play along
But the voice inside sings a different song
What is wrong with me?

See the light as it shines on us? It’s blinding
But no one knows, how deep it goes
And it seems like it’s calling out to me, so come find me
And let me know, what’s beyond that future, will I cross that struggle?

The future. It calls me
And no one knows, how far it goes
If I just took off one day
One day I’ll know, how far I’ll go

Part Two

Who am I?
I am a boy who loves his dreams
I’m the boy who loves the world
It calls me
I am the son of a teacher
I am descended from royalty
Who ruled with grace
They lead me
I will deliver us to the future
I can journey farther
I am everything I’ve learned and more
Still they call me
And the call isn’t out there at all, it’s inside me
It’s like my mind is always falling and rising
I will carry them in my heart hoping you’ll remember me
Whatever comes next
I know the way
I am Christian!
